Details

Many destinations in Zambia offer the chance to explore the bush by river as well as by land, the prime example of this being the Lower Zambezi National Park. River safaris usually take the form of a three to four hour cruise at leisurely pace in an open-sided motor-launch. A river cruise offers a unique perspective of the bush and allows you to get up close to many of the larger animals such as elephants, hippos and crocodiles, as well as being a good way to see many river-dwelling species of birds. Your boat will be stocked with drinks and your guide will be on hand to answer any questions and point out anything you may have missed.

As well as the Lower Zambezi, where all lodges offer river safaris as inclusive-activities in place of a game-drive, you can also take to the water in Kafue, the Upper Zambezi around Victoria Falls, and during the rainy season in South Luangwa. During the months of January and February, when much of the Luangwa Valley is flooded, the only way to negotiate your way to the [cont.]

few hardy lodges still open to visitors is by boat. If you prefer to travel under your own steam while in these locations you can always choose to go canoeing, another great way to see the river, or maybe stay on terra firma and try your hand at fly-fishing.
